How to reach the Microdevices for Photonics Laboratory

The MiPLAB is located inside the “Nello Carrara" Institute of Applied Physics
http://www.ifac.cnr.it/

It occupies a part of the Buildings B of the CNR Research Area of Florence, which is located at the , a few kilometers northwest of Florence, and not far from the “Amerigo Vespucci” Airport and the exits from the A1 and A11 motorways.

By Car

FROM THE MOTORWAY

After exiting at “Firenze Nord”, continue in the direction of Florence (A11) and take the “Sesto Fiorentino” exit. Continue towards Sesto Fiorentino along Via dell’Osmannoro, following the road signs for the “Polo Scientifico”. The CNR is located in the red-brick complex at the end of the “Polo” area.

FROM THE CITY CENTRE

After reaching Via Sestese on the north-west periphery of the city, continue in the direction of Sesto Fiorentino. After a few kilometres, at the traffic light just after a large AGIP service station, turn left and pass under the railway lines. At the next STOP sign, turn left again and then continue along the road parallel to the railway. This road subsequently encounters another traffic light and flanks the municipal dog pound. At the entrance to the dog pound, bear right, taking Via Pasolini. At the first roundabout in Via Pasolini, turn left and continue for about 300 metres. By turning right, you will be in Via Madonna del Piano.

By using public transportation

WHEN ARRIVING BY AIR

The only possibility for direct connections is by taxi from the airport, the cost which will be higher since it involves an out-of-town ride. Otherwise, you can choose one of the solutions (1,2) below, after arriving in Piazza Stazione in Florence by means of the Volainbus shuttle from the airport

WHEN ARRIVING BY TRAIN

If you get Florence at the Santa Maria Novella railway station

Use one of the following solutions:

  1. ATAF bus n.23 (if you leave the station from the left side exit: the bus stop is under the canopy; if you leave the station from the central exit: reach the footpath at the end of the steps). The buses marked “Firenze Nova” or “Nuovo Pignone” connect up with the buses n.59 at the “Panciatichi 01” and “Tre Pietre” stops. Travel time: 25-30 minutes with bus 23 + 13-20 minutes bus 59 waiting time + 10 minutes with bus 59.
  2. ATAF bus n.57 (if you leave the station from the left side exit: the bus stop is along the station side; if you leave the station from the central exit: reach the footpath at the end of the steps). The bused marked “Sesto Fiorentino – Zambra” connect up with the buses n.59 at the “Gora” stop. Travel time: 35-40 minutes with bus 57 + 13-20 minutes bus 59 waiting time + 5 minutes with bus 59.

If you arrive at the Firenze Rifredi railway station
You could get off your train directly at the Firenze Rifredi railway station or reach it by a metropolitan train (5 minutes from Florence Santa Maria Novella station, 4 – 9 trains every hour). At the Rifredi station, exit on the west side by using the underpassage (direction via Vasco de Gama) where you will find the ATAF bus stop for the bus n.59. Waiting time: 13 – 20 minutes. Travel time for reaching CNR: about 15 minutes.
